About the CYBC

About Us

The Carolina Young Birders Club was founded in 2013 by Matthew Janson. We are supported by our 'parent' club, the Carolina Bird Club. The CBC funds the CYBC and has been instrumental in the Carolina Young Birders Club's foundation and has been a continual source of support for the club. We seek to connect like-minded young birders and to help foster the next generation of birders and ornithologists.

How To Join The CYBC

Joining the CYBC is free! We encourage you to sign up here on our website. All we ask is that you remain active within the club and participate! Additionally, consider joining the Carolina Bird Club. If you are 18 or younger, you can join the CBC for free! Have your parent email hq@carolinabirdclub.org (with "Youth Membership" in the subject line of the email) giving your name, address, email address (if any), and age.

By joining the CBC, you will have access to the CBC's quarterly ornithological journal, The Chat, receive lowered fees for registering for CBC meetings, and more!

The Mascot Bird & Logo

Our mascot bird is the Prothonotary Warbler, Prothonotaria citrea. This stunning warbler is rather easy to find in the majority of North and South Carolina, where it inhabits wooded streams, swamps, floodplains, and other wet, wooded habitats. It is unique among the eastern warblers for nesting in tree cavities, often created by woodpeckers or nuthatches. If placed in the appropriate habitat, Prothonotary Warblers will even use nest boxes with a 1 1/4" hole. The unusual name comes from Roman prothonotaries, which wore bright yellow robes. Another name for these birds is Golden Swamp Warbler.

The logo for the Carolina Young Birders Club was made by artist, photographer, and birder Evan Lipton of Milton, Massachusetts. You can see more of Evan's work at his website Avian Obsession.
